Spreading Holiday Cheer: Lee’s Summit Social Services’ Christmas Store is Open!

As the holiday season unfolds, many of us are filled with joy, warmth, and the spirit of giving. However, for some families, the financial burden of the holidays can be overwhelming. That’s where Lee’s Summit Social Services steps in to make a difference.

The Magic of the Christmas Store

Lee’s Summit Social Services has once again opened its annual Christmas store, a heartwarming tradition that has been bringing joy to families for 32 years. This year, the store opened its doors on December 4 and will remain open until December 20, providing a special shopping experience for over 940 children, with the number expected to reach 1,000 by December 16.

Here’s how it works: Families who are clients of Lee’s Summit Social Services provide wishlists for their children, which are then written on stars and hung on Christmas trees at local businesses. The generous community purchases these items, allowing parents to “shop” for their children at the Christmas store completely free of charge. This initiative not only provides essential gifts but also restores a sense of normalcy and joy during the holidays for families who might otherwise struggle financially.

Serving the Community

The Christmas store, located at 108 SE 4th Street, serves families in Lee’s Summit, Greenwood, Lone Jack, and Lake Lotawana. Lee’s Summit Social Services is dedicated to assisting low-income families and individuals with various basic needs, including food, utility and rent assistance, clothing, medical items, and school supplies[3].

How You Can Help

The success of this program relies heavily on community support. Here are a few ways you can make a difference:

Donate: If you can’t find a wishlist star, you can donate money online to support the program. Every contribution counts[1][4].

Let’s Come Together

As Megan Salerno, the executive director of Lee’s Summit Social Services, aptly put it, “This community that we have has always been very supportive of our agency and helping us continue our mission in this community.” Let’s continue this tradition of support and ensure every child has a wonderful Christmas.
